The Show: Midnite Monster Hop at Otto’s Shrunken Head – Saturday 27 October, 2014
The Lineup: The Feejee Mermaids, The Luxurious Faux Furs

Just back from this month’s Midnite Monster Hop, what a great night! If you’re into the kind of music that Voodoo Tattoo Magazine is all about, you can pretty much count on a good time when you spend the last Saturday night of the month at Otto’s! I got there just at the end of the Feejee Mermaids’ set and in time to catch 2-piece The Luxurious Faux Furs fill the room with just a couple of drums and a hollow-body guitar. I hadn’t seen them before but I loved that they combined their stripped-down sound with energy, bluesy vocals and magnetic stage presence.

Inspired by ’80’s garage rock band The Gories and bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, The Luxurious Faux Furs are Josh and Jessica, who normally only play every couple of months but are just back from playing a solid week of gigs in France. “We would be thrilled for anyone to fly us to Europe again to play shows!”

Josh says they liked double-adjective band names and named their band in a small homage to Tav Falco & The Unapproachable Panther Burns. Their set was filled out with both originals and covers, including gospel songs and tracks from The Gories and The Velvet Underground. “We play a lot of blues songs. The world is not a pretty place and our songwriting reflects that. But we would be happy just playing the songs [covers] we love. That’s why we do it, to play the music we love.”

Obviously there’s nothing like being there in person at Otto’s Shrunken Head and seeing the Midnite Monster Hop live, but you can also catch the show at Phantom Creep Radio. MMH host The Mighty Moloch described the crowd at Otto’s as the live studio audience, and people call in from all over the world while the show is being broadcast.

To top it off, my personal hero Sean Yseult (former bassist of White Zombie and currently playing in her own band, Star & Dagger) was also there to catch the show. She was kind enough to pose for photos and humbly accept gushing admiration from me and other girls in the crowd who look up to her as an inspiring, respected female musician. Got that, girls? Don’t just hang around the guys in the band, pick up a guitar or drumsticks and practice until you can get on stage and rock the house!

Here’s a clip of the Luxurious Faux Furs playing live in France last month, August 2014.

Check out the The Luxurious Faux Furs Facebook page to find out when they’re playing again. The Midnite Monster Hop is at Otto’s Shrunken Head on the last Saturday of every month.
